Rabbit Trails
Today is a fun day of reading. I took it in with a grin on my face, seeing the excitement and joy of David as he makes preparations for His son to build the temple.

David wasn’t allowed to build it but he did all that he could to prepare for it. I have to admit that I grinned while reading this account where David said “My son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for YHWH must be exceedingly magnificent…” I noted this in my Bible as Biblical Helicopter parenting.

Obviously, David was anxious to get the temple built and so he wanted to give his son every advantage to getting started, building the most magnificent temple he could while taking away any excuse to put off building it since all of the materials were at hand and at the ready. I love 1 Chronicles 22:14-16 where he lists all of the “great pains” he has gone to in order to have everything ready to go and then concludes with essentially saying “Now get on with it!”

I can’t help but see how excited David must have been about this. It almost reminds me of a parent preparing for the wedding of their child but that is all I have that I can relate it to in my own life experience, having never raised a king nor prepared for a temple to be built for YHWH.

David prepared the next generation. He went to great lengths to equip his son with all he needed to honor YHWH. Think about that a moment. This is one of our most solemn charges as a parent, the greatest legacy we could leave. Have we taught the next generation to honor YHWH? Have we equipped them with His word? Have we, in our example, given that word authority in our lives or have we merely given it lip service? At the end of the day, our children live by our example, far more than our instruction.

Another if/then statement:
Amid all this preparation, David also makes it a point to offer sage and timeless advice.

“May YHWH grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of YHWH your God. THEN you will prosper IF you are careful to observe the statutes and rules that YHWH commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed.”1 Chronicles 22:12-13

As I read those last two sentences, I was careful to keep them in context. This is David warning/telling/advising his son, who will inherit his throne, about the importance of walking in obedience with the Father in the line of his duties as King and in his life in general. In that same breath, within the context of telling him to be obedient, he encourages him to be strong and courageous (in his obedience to the commandments of YHWH) and not to fear nor be dismayed (in his obedience to the commandments of YHWH). There has always been, from the beginning of time, pressure to step off of God’s path. Following Him does take strength, courage, and steadfastness and we can surely benefit from the encouragement of fellow believers!

1 Chronicles 23:1 When David was old and full of days…
The Hebrew word for “full” best translates to “satisfied” and in the way it is used in this sentence, it is to denote that he had lived a full life and was satisfied, ready to move on. He then set about final preparations for the temple, his government, and his people.

Wow, the account of Solomon’s rise to the throne in 1 Chronicles 23:1 so much more peaceful than what we read in 1 Kings 1!

I found our reading today to be a little easier on my heart. It’s nice to have a bit of a breather. But every letter is a gift, and every jot and tittle applicable to our lives today.

I’m excited to be here reading the word with you today. I’m thrilled to see each one of you as your names pop up in the comments, and I’m so blessed to be a part of this wonderful family!

May YHWH bless the reading of His Word!
