In a world that distorts our self-image and labels us by our sins, we must turn to the true mirror of God’s Word, which reveals our identity as beloved children of a loving Father who can transform our lives through His grace and forgiveness.

– Script Below –

Listen, guys:

We have been looking into the wrong mirrors, mirrors provided by the world in the form of false friends and Facebook, social media and self-loathing, wrong thinking and sometimes even our religion. Each sends us back an image of ourselves, but the image is off. It’s our reflection. It bears some resemblance to us, but it’s like we are passing by a window at night, or looking into the murky water of a still pond before the sun comes up. The reflection that we see is distorted, shadowed, misshapen. Our mind tells us that the image we see IS us, but the reflection is warped, skewed from the person we have become.

See, these fake “mirrors” tell us that we are less than enough. They tell us that we are broken beyond repair, that our life has made us unlovable, worthless, useless. These “mirrors” call us by everything but our name. They call us liars. They call us cheaters and manipulators. They call us addicts, abusers, adulterers. They call us unworthy. And the scariest thing is not the mirror, it’s the voice we hear, that part of us that looks at those images and says, “Well, they’re not wrong…”

I know. I’ve seen myself in those mirrors. I was an addict, a liar, and a manipulator. I was hateful, hurtful, and altogether unworthy. I was a filthy, broken mess in a really good mask. The “mirrors,” – the world – knew my name, but they called me by my sin. My savior, our Messiah, knew my sin, but He called me by name. Like Lazarus fresh from the tomb, we’re still working to get these grave-clothes off, but my life is now IN HIM.

Now, little by little, as we try our best to follow in His footsteps, as we learn to accept the Father’s grace and try to walk in obedience, we are being turned away from those fake “mirrors” and placed in front of the well-lit mirror of His Word. It’s an amazing, loving, grace-full process where the Father allows us a glimpse of who we are in His eyes, and who we are becoming.

We are being shown that we have been crucified with Christ and that the life we now live, we live by faith in the Son of God who loved us and gave himself for us.

We are being shown that were created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.

We are being shown that His grace is sufficient, that his power is made perfect in weakness.

We are being taught that He will supply all of our needs according to His will out of his abundance.

We are being taught that even before we decided to live for Him, He decided to love US. He knew – he knows – our mess and yet He created us with a purpose and gives us the opportunity daily to glorify Him.

We are being taught that we are redeemed, bought by a sacrifice more precious than silver or gold, adopted into the family of an Almighty God and given permission not only to call him YHWH or Adonai or Everlasting, but to call Him “Abba,” “Father,” “Papa.”

We are loved. You are loved. Let me say that again. You are loved, and the Father wants to show you just how much through your reflection in the well-lit mirror of His Word.

Till next time, book open; eyes on Him.
