We live in a world where negativity is only a scroll away.

Open any app, turn on the news, or glance at the comments section—and it feels like we’re swimming in a sea of bickering,

blame, and bitterness. It can be so easy to get pulled into it.

We tell ourselves we’re just staying informed, or just venting—

but little by little, we begin to reflect the very things we’re consuming.

But here’s the truth: we weren’t made to blend in with the darkness—we were called to shine in it.

In Matthew 5:14–16, Jesus tells us:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

That’s not just a nice verse for a coffee mug. That’s a calling.

But if we’re honest, sometimes our lights feel dim. We’re tired. We’re distracted. We’ve spent more time absorbing the world’s outrage than sitting at the feet of Jesus. And the longer we linger in the shadows, the more comfortable those shadows become.

So how do we step out?

First, we unplug from the noise and reconnect with the source. The world shouts, but God often whispers. To hear Him, we need stillness. That might mean logging off for a while, taking a walk while only listening to the sounds of nature around us, and starting the day with Scripture instead of our phones.

Second, we guard our hearts and minds. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What we take in eventually becomes what we pour out. We have to be careful what we feed our minds—what we watch, read, and what we surround ourselves with. If it’s not drawing us closer to Christ, it might be pulling us away.

And finally, we become intentional about living out love. Light doesn’t have to argue darkness to chase it away, it just has to shine. That doesn’t mean we never speak truth, but we do it with the tone, humility, and compassion of Christ. We treat others the way we hope to be treated, not the way the internet tells us they deserve to be treated.

Being the light isn’t about pretending everything is fine when it may not be. It’s about pointing to the One who is our hope, no matter the circumstances.

So today, if you feel like you’ve gotten caught up in the darkness, as we all do from time to time, I want to remind you that there. There is always grace. And there is no better time than to step into your calling than right now. Step out, step up, and let your life reflect the love of our Messiah to a world that desperately needs it. We can change the world for someone else, but first we have to change it for ourselves.
