Today we are reading the genealogy of the Levites. This is one of the most detailed listing of the Levites genealogy, which is why many believe this book was written by a Levite.

Recall that the tribe of Levi is extremely important as they were the ones ordained as priests for YHWH. They were adopted away from the tribes of Israel to serve Him and are no longer counted among the tribes of Israel because they are in exclusive service to YHWH. In fact, when we get to Ezra, we’ll see the rebuilding of the temple and Ezra sending folks to find Levites to serve as priests!

No doubt, they were ever aware of being set apart in this very special and holy way. They were seen differently from among the tribes and held to a higher standard, both by YHWH and by those around them.

In response, and taking seriously this great honor of representing and carrying out His will, they had the responsibility of diligently studying, practicing, and living out His teachings. They couldn’t afford to compromise as they knew that they could not halfheartedly serve a wholehearted god. No corners were cut. No instructions replaced with some they felt were better. Their opinion and insight was not needed because they understood that His way, His wisdom, and His teachings are far and above anything they themselves could create. This is a great example of how the Hebrew mindset works.

They held in reverence the Father and all that came from Him, and they did not show this level of reverence to anything else.

This book of genealogies is important because it reminds Israel who they are.

This chapter is important to the Levites because it reminds them of who they are.

This Bible is important for us because it reminds us of who we are.

If we read it.

If we follow it.

We can still say we are followers but if we aren’t donning the robe through daily application of his word then we aren’t fooling anyone, least of all the Father.

The Levites were adopted away from Israel to serve the King. We have been adopted away from this world for the same purpose.

Test everything, hold tight to what is good.~ 1 Thess 5:21

We are saved by Grace alone: Obedience is not the root of our salvation, it is the fruit!

May YHWH bless the reading of His Word!
