Have you ever been depressed? Have you ever felt your life had no meaning or worth? I would guess most of you have at some point in your life. Contrary to some claims, Christians CAN feel depressed. But despite these feelings, there is meaning and worth in all our lives.

Looking outward shows us death, war, crimes, financial ruin, and dreary weather forecasts. An inward view of our failures or hardships can be gloomier than a stormy day. But only an upward perspective leads us to meaning and worth. Outward and inward circumstances don’t determine our significance.

Those circumstances are the things Satan wants us focused on. He wants us to be down and out. He wants us weak, so he and his demons can attack us. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us: “Stay Alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” He and his partners in crime are running out of time, and they have all hands on deck. The closer to their doom, the harder they push their lies and manipulation to take as many humans as they can down with them. If we align our thoughts with their lies, it can lead to depression.

How are your thoughts aligned? If you reach into your pocket and pick out two pennies, one new and shiny the other old and corroded, which would you give away? Most of us would give the older, uglier one. If you would give the new, shiny one away, you know what? It doesn’t matter. They are worth the exact same amount: one cent. We are the ones who assign worth according to appearance, not YHWH.

What are YHWH’s thoughts about our meaning and worth?

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26)

“… you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:20)

Our Father and Creator looks at each of us “pennies” with the same love and compassion. Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins. He thinks we are worth paying the ultimate price. When we align our thoughts with His, our meaning and worth ALL MAKES CENTS.

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” (2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 NLT)
