Rabbit Trails

We are flying through four chapters of Job today and I know a lot of us are glad it goes quickly. Job is one of those books, similar to Leviticus and Revelation, that requires deeper level rumination in order to be able to soak all the juice up. In absence of that opportunity this go around, we must settle for the highlights and seek out the below surface level stuff on our own.

Today in our reading we see Job grappling with trying to understand why the wicked aren’t suffering and he is. However, by the end of chapter 24 he reminds us that YHWH does see the sin of the wicked. While we may think they are going unpunished, this is not the case. Remember, YHWH works on His timeline, not ours.

Chapter 26 has Job calling out his friends, wanting to know how they have helped those who needed it and asking how their weak wisdom has been of benefit to anyone. He reminds them of just who YHWH is and how above and beyond He is compared to them.

Throughout all of this, Job remains committed to YHWH and to his own integrity.

And Job again took up his discourse, and said:

“As God lives, who has taken away my right,
and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,
as long as my breath is in me,
and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,
my lips will not speak falsehood,
and my tongue will not utter deceit.
Far be it from me to say that you are right;
till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.
I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go;
my heart does not reproach me for any of my days.

Job 27:1-6

And another condemnation towards his friends:

“I will teach you about the hand of God;

What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.

Surely all of you have seen it;

Why then do you behave with complete nonsense?”

Job 27:11-12

We end our reading today with a passage that we should take to heart. No matter the turmoil around us, no matter the unrest and evil and brazen worship of false gods, YHWH sees and and He is in control. He will deliver His people.

“From where then does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
It is hidden from the eyes of all living,
And concealed from the birds of the air.
Destruction and Death say,
‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’
God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
For He looks to the ends of the earth,
And sees under the whole heavens,
To establish a weight for the wind,
And apportion the waters by measure.
When He made a law for the rain,
And a path for the thunderbolt,
Then He saw wisdom and declared it;
He prepared it, indeed,
He searched it out.
And to man He said,
‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
And to depart from evil is understanding.'”

Job 28:20-28

He is our shelter. He is our source of wisdom.

He is our source – period.

Test everything, hold tight to what is good.~ 1 Thess 5:21

We are saved by Grace alone: Obedience is not the root of our salvation, it is the fruit!
