About a year and a half ago my husband and I moved into his “Mawmaw’s old house”. It is the house that started the family farm. The first four rooms were built in the early 1930’s, the next two in the late 30’s. My father-in-law was born in this house in 1940. The final two rooms were added on in the 50’s. I have often dreamed of living just like I’m living now…front porch with a swing, screen doors…simple.

The sole purpose for making the decision to move here was to be on the farm, within earshot of my mother-in-law that needs more attention than what anyone was able to give previously.

The day I walked around the house and yard with the family members that actually own the house, I was very clear to inform them that the scope of yard maintenance that needed to be done on a regular basis was, and still is, totally out of my area of expertise. You see, as much as I love the house, stories shared with me, and just a quick scan of the property, I realized that Mawmaw, and the generations after her, spent their efforts in the yard. Mawmaw was a master gardener

Not.My.Thing ?

I made a vow to tend to the blueberry bushes, mainly because my mother-in-law still enjoys that fruit when it comes, but she can no longer tend the bushes.

So, over the course of the last year or so, as I find myself doing what I can to put forth at least some effort in the yard, I have been pleasantly surprised to find hidden treasures on occasion. Treasures that have been hidden by neglected vegetation overgrowth, or treasures buried among neglected flower beds. A few items listed among my “treasures” are an old wire hanging basket, an old gardening spade, an old pair of clippers, to name a few. Each time I unexpectedly discover a treasure, I smile. I smile because of the history that I don’t even know of, or have heard about. I smile because I know that people that my husband loved dearly, but I never met, touched and worked with those things.

This house and this land is not a museum, it is a working farm, and lived in. Now I find myself trying to be aware of hidden treasures on this property when I walk outside to work.

For most of my years walking with the Father, I have neglected the true treasures that come from studying His Word, but no more.

As I began a journey in January with Seeking Scripture, it caused an unexpected discovery of true treasures! Now, every day, I not only look forward to the “yard work” of reading, but I have my shovel in hand…ready to dig and discover treasures that I KNOW are there! I may not know what they are, but I know it’s Him. He says, “If you seek Me, you will find Me”. Father knows what He has for me to discover, the deeper understanding to be unearthed in my heart and mind…and it is better than any house, or piece of property!
