I would like to learn to read, write, and speak Hebrew. What is the best way to do that? I know several in the group have been working on learning it, but I don’t know anyone else to ask this question. Thank you for your time and guidance.
I can understand your desire to do so; I have had fleeting thoughts of one day learning however, it never seems like it’s the right time.
One vital thing I want to stress here is that if you feel like you need to do this in order to understand the Bible –
Our Father has given us everything we need to be able to follow Him without learning a different language. We don’t need a degree, a teacher, or some other knowledge to be able to read what the Father has given us.
Our walks will not be impeded if we don’t learn any Hebrew or if we only look up words here and there on Bible Hub or Blue Letter Bible. For example, when we see the word “peace”, we know that it is shalom in Hebrew.
We must trust that the Father supplies us with everything we need to do what He has called us to do.
Ok, back to your question.
It is important to note that there is a difference between biblical Hebrew and modern Hebrew.
Biblical Hebrew is an ancient language that isn’t really spoken today. It is only used in the context of religion, whereas the modern Hebrew language that is spoken in Israel today is very different. Just like other languages, it has evolved over time and has been mixed with other cultures.
If you want to learn to read, write, and speak the modern Hebrew language, many programs, such as Duolingo, Mondly, and Ling apps, can help you.
However, if you are looking to be able to read the Bible in ancient Hebrew, that is very different. While there are classes out there at Universities that you could take, websites such as The Ancient Hebrew Research Center will give you some instruction.
I hope this helps.
