If you ever happen to find yourself camping with some Bible lovers, chances are one of them will have one of these little beauties: The Waterproof Bible. Sounds like an amazingly creative idea, right? They were created by a married couple, Bobby and Anna, who share the story behind them below:

As believers in Jesus Christ with a love to be in God’s creation and exposed to the elements, we desired to have a Bible by our side for reading. Our exploring has led us to mountain tops, river banks, sandy beaches, misty valleys, dark caves, hot springs, and now a spill-prone breakfast table. In 2005, God allowed us to publish the first Waterproof Bible and put an end to all the worrying that we had done in the past about ruining Bibles.

Now, Ricky and I love to go camping, and we tend to run away from home to the local state park as often as possible. We typically do three things while camping: go for walks, rest, and read our Bibles. Anyone who has spent a good bit of time outside knows that, in the Southeast, there is always moisture in the air. Over time, Bible pages soak that up and become a bit wavy. The average Bible is definitely worse for wear. Bible study is always an integral part of each camping trip for us, and there is a week each year where we like to camp and study the Bible every day with 250 or so of our dearest friends. With this in mind, I felt justified in taking the plunge and adding this Bible to our collection.

When I opened the package, I was immediately disappointed, but errantly so. You see, I opened it, felt the pages, and was sure they had made a mistake and sent me a regular Bible. The pages were so thin. I didn’t think there was any way they were waterproof. I checked the label and saw that it was the correct Bible, but I remained skeptical. How waterproof was “waterproof?” Could it handle a drop or two? What about the spine? The cover?

I knew I was going to have to put it to the test.

Now, I like my Bibles to be easy to read, and I really prefer large print. While this is a standard-sized print, I do find that the nice dark lettering and contrast to the crisp white pages make it very easy on the eyes. Seeing as how coffee and Bible reading go hand in hand at my house, I thought this would be a good place to start.

Will it pass the coffee test? Let’s see.

It’s horrifying to see, isn’t it? However, the coffee wiped right off, with no staining or absorption whatsoever. The thread used in binding, as well as the cover material, is waterproof as well.

This is after I wiped it clean with a damp dish towel. It seemed surreal that there was no damage or staining. Still, it needed to pass the camping test. As it turned out, Ricky and I were meeting some friends for a Passover camping trip the very next weekend, and it poured so much that we were half expecting to see Noah pull up next to us. So I took my trusty new Bible and tested it out for ya.

Will it pass the rain test?

This was not an easy thing for me to do, but I knew I had to try. After this, I was just sure there would be some damage. Much to my surprise, the Bible was no worse for wear after being held out in the rain.

Rather than dry it off immediately, I set it down on a table and let it sit for a good half hour or so. As the water did not permeate at all and there wasn’t any sunshine, I eventually had to wipe it off with a towel.

Did it ever wrinkle?

After all of that abuse and water, this is the Bible today. The pages are still as flat and crisp as when they were new.

But can you write in it?

You sure can. The image below shows writing made with a ballpoint pen. You can also highlight with dry highlighters, which is exactly what I use.  (Click here to see my absolute favorites).

My final thoughts

I am beyond impressed with this Bible. I never really thought that a waterproof Bible would be truly waterproof. Did I mention that it even floats? If you are an avid camper, fisherman, hiker, clumsy person who likes to drink while you read, or know someone who just loves to spend time outdoors where the natural humidity and precipitation can take their toll on thin Bible pages over time, this Bible would make an excellent gift. It is the perfect travel and adventure Bible.

The Waterproof Bible is available in several versions and translations. Check out the links below:
